What To Look For:

  • The best CPU fans are generally copper with a powerful fan.  The problem is that most of these powerful fans make a lot of noise. Finding a good combination of noise level and power can be difficult.
  • Some CPU (and case) fans have automatic or manual speed controls that prevent them from running at full speed when the CPU isn't excessively hot. This can be helpful because your computer won't run as hot when it's idle or when you're doing simple tasks like working in Microsoft Word or Excel. It will speed up when you're playing computer games, but with the sound from the game, you probably won't notice the CPU fan anyway.
  • Again, the best case fans are powerful but with a minimal amount of noise. Look for the CFM (cubic feet per minute) value (the higher the better) and the decibal level (dB or dBa - the lower the better).
